Edinburgh Zoo is well known for housing penguins in its collection, the first three being king penguins that arrived in January 1913, and were the first penguins to be seen outside of the South Atlantic anywhere in the world. The zoo's current penguin pool, named "Penguins Rock", is 65 metres long, 3.5 metres deep at its deepest point, contains 1.2 million litres of water, and houses colonies of Gentoo, king and rockhopper penguins.
